چکیده

Inhomogeneous universe models have been proposed as an alternative explanation for the apparent acceleration of the cosmic expansion that does not require dark energy. In the simplest class of inhomogeneous models, we live within a large, spherically symmetric void. Several studies have shown that such a model can be made consistent with many observations, in particular the redshift–luminosity distance relation for type Ia supernovae, provided that the void is of Gpc size and that we live close to the center. Such a scenario challenges the Copernican principle that we do not occupy a special place in the universe. We use the first-year Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II supernova search data set as well as the Constitution supernova data set to put constraints on the observer position in void models, using the fact that offcenter observers will observe an anisotropic universe. We first show that a spherically symmetric void can give good fits to the supernova data for an on-center observer, but that the two data sets prefer very different voids. We then continue to show that the observer can be displaced at least fifteen percent of the void scale radius from the center and still give an acceptable fit to the supernova data. When combined with the observed dipole anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background however, we find that the data compells the observer to be located within about one percent of the void scale radius. Based on these results, we conclude that considerable fine-tuning of our position within the void is needed to fit the supernova data, strongly disfavouring the model from a Copernican principle point of view.

A LOCAL HUBBLE BUBBLE FROM SNe Ia?

We analyze the monopole in the peculiar velocities of 44 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to test for a local void. The sample extends from 20 to 300 hMpc, with distances, deduced from light-curve shapes, accurate to ∼ 6%. Assuming Ωm = 1 and ΩΛ = 0, the most significant deviation we find from the Hubble law is an outwards flow of (6.6 ± 2.2)% inside a sphere of radius 70 hMpc as would be produced b...

The properties of interstellar matter (ISM) at the Sun are regulated by our location with respect to the Local Bubble (LB) void in the ISM. The LB is bounded by associations of massive stars and fossil supernovae that have disrupted natal ISM and driven intermediate velocity ISM into the LB interior void. The Sun is located in such a driven ISM parcel, which is low density (< 10 g cm). The Loca...

Dipole anisotropies of IRAS galaxies and the contribution of a large-scale local void

Recent observations of dipole anisotropies show that the velocity of the Local Group (vG) induced by the clustering of IRAS galaxies has an amplitude and direction similar to those of the velocity of Cosmic Microwave Background dipole anisotropy (vCMB), but the difference |vG −vCMB| is still ∼ 170 km/s, which is about 28% of |vCMB|. Here we consider the possibility that the origin of this diffe...

The properties of interstellar matter at the Sun are regulated by our location with respect to a void in the local matter distribution, known as the Local Bubble. The Local Bubble (LB) is bounded by associations of massive stars and fossil supernovae that have disrupted dense interstellar matter (ISM), driving low density intermediate velocity ISM into the void. The Sun appears to be located in...
